What comes to mind when you think of a yogi? Perhaps someone with a peaceful expression, flowing robes, and an aura of calm that makes you want to hug them or ask them what their secret is.

I honestly do not at first glance resemble the aforementioned appearance of a classical spiritual person.

I have an extravagant appearance, a more vigorous manner, and a wild personality. But deep down, I hold important values for life and am spiritually evolved to be able to impart the wisdom of yogic philosophy to those around me through this daily transformation.

But the classic profile of a yogi is much more than a stereotype. It is a fascinating blend of values, lifestyle, and the elusive inner peace we all secretly crave.

So let's peel back the layers (like a lotus unfolding!) and find out what a real yogi really looks like and what he values most in life...

External appearance: More than just stretch pants

Let's start with the basics. Yes, a yogi can be seen in stretchy pants, often eco-friendly and eco-friendly. But it's not just about comfort (although comfort is key when you're bending over like a pretzel). It's about simplicity and practicality.

A true yogi's wardrobe isn't cluttered, it's carefully curated. Each piece of clothing serves a purpose and ideally has minimal impact on the environment. And let's be honest, anyone who can choose "flow" as a lifestyle deserves respect.

Beyond clothing, however, a yogi's physical appearance often reflects his or her inner life. You may notice a calm demeanor, a certain glow (perhaps from all those green juices), and a body that is both strong and flexible - physically and metaphorically.

But don't be fooled into thinking that this means the yogi is always thin, young, or fits any particular mold. Yoga is for everyone, just like the life of a yogi. The true essence of a yogi is seen in his actions, not in his abs.

Values: True core strength

At the core of the yogi's lifestyle are the values they profess. And no, it's not just about mastering the handstand. Here are a few core values that define a yogi:

1.Mindfulness: A yogi values the present moment. They understand that the past is gone and the future is uncertain, so why not focus on the present? This mindfulness doesn't just take place on the mat during the sun salutation, but carries over into everyday life - whether you're enjoying a cup of tea or listening to a friend without immediately thinking about how to respond.

2. Compassion: A yogi lives with an open heart. He practices kindness, not only to others, but also to himself. Compassion in the life of a yogi means giving without expecting anything in return, understanding that we are all connected, and realizing that everyone is doing the best they can. And if that means forgiving the person who crossed your path in traffic, so be it (after a few deep breaths, of course).

3. Simplicity: Have you ever heard the phrase "less is more"? A yogi follows this mantra. He cleans up not only his home, but his mind and his life. They focus on what's truly important and find joy in simplicity - whether it's a walk in nature, daily meditation, or cooking a meal with love.

4. Balance: You don't have to be a Libra to appreciate balance. A yogi strives for harmony in all areas of life - between work and play, effort and ease, doing and being. That doesn't mean they always succeed (who does?), but they understand that balance is the key to a peaceful life. And let's face it, finding balance is the biggest challenge, whether it's doing a headstand or balancing work emails and Netflix.

5. Gratitude: A yogi wakes up every day feeling grateful. Not just for the big things, but also for the small moments - for a warm cup of tea, for the feel of the earth beneath your feet, or for the quiet of the morning. Gratitude keeps them grounded and reminds them that life is a gift, even on the hard days.

Examples from life: Yogis in the wild world

Imagine this...

You're in a coffee shop, waiting in line, and you notice someone smiling warmly at the barista even as they wait patiently for their turn. It's a yogi. They're not in a hurry, they're present, and they understand that the person serving them is a human being, not a latte-making machine.

Or another idea...

You're in a stressful meeting and one person in the room is calmly listening, offering thoughtful input and not getting swept up in the chaos. That's a yogi. He brings this mindfulness and balance to every situation, making him the person you want on your team - or as your life coach.

And then there's the friend who always knows what to say and makes you feel seen and heard without judgment. That's a yogi. He values connection and strives to be fully present for others.

The inner journey: More than just a position

Being a yogi doesn't mean mastering every position (although, let's be honest, standing with the crowd is a victory worth celebrating). It's an inner journey. It's about showing up on the mat and in life with an open heart and a willingness to grow. It's about recognizing that we're all a work in progress, and that's okay.

A yogi understands that the path to peace is not always smooth.

There will be bumps, falls from the tree position, and days when meditation feels like a struggle with your own thoughts. But they go on. They know that yoga is not just about touching your toes, but also about touching your soul.

So what does a yogi really look like? They look like you, like me, like anybody who is willing to step on the mat of life and give it a try. And while they may experience moments of frustration (like when the Wi-Fi goes out during a virtual yoga class), they respond to everything with a smile, a deep breath, and an understanding that life is a practice just like yoga.

And remember, if you ever meet someone who's too Zen, they may just be a yogi - or have had too many kombuchas. Either way, it's probably someone worth getting to know.

When did you first meet a yogi? What was the first thing you noticed, and how did you recognize him/her?
