For me, the places I like best in yoga are associated with a special force or energy that is most present around us in nature in special places.

When a light breeze refreshes my face in the proud Warrior pose, or when the warm sun gives me strength in the balancing position of a Dancer, the whole practice suddenly takes a different direction.

The sounds of nature and earth energy are empowering on the path to achieving balance and personal power in daily life.

In search of inner peace and self-knowledge, many of us turn to yoga, not only as a physical exercise but more importantly as a spiritual path.

Off the mat, there are places in the world that seem to resonate with a deep energy capable of deepening our yoga practice and transforming our lives.

Imbued with history, spirituality, and natural beauty, these sacred places invite us to connect with something greater than ourselves, offering us lessons and experiences that resonate in our souls.

Imagine standing at the foot of the Himalayas in India, where the very air seems to be laced with meditation and prayer, or walking the quiet paths of the Zen gardens of Kyoto, where every step is an exercise in mindfulness...

These places are not mere locations on a map, but portals to a deeper understanding of self and the universe.

They have the power to change us, to strip away the superficial layers of our being, and bring us closer to our true essence.

A finger on the map or transformative experiences of spiritual places...

Varanasi in India

Known as one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Varanasi pulses with the essence of spiritual India. The energy of this place, with its ancient ghats and the sacred river Ganges, compels us to confront life and death, detach from materialism, and embrace the eternal cycle of existence. Practicing yoga here, whether on the banks of the river or in one of the ancient temples in the city, connects us to the deep spiritual heritage of this land and deepens our meditations and asanas with a sense of continuity with yogis past and future.

Sedona, Arizona

Amidst the striking red sandstone formations in Sedona are said to be vortices, powerful places that radiate earth energy. This unique natural energy can enhance our yoga practice and make it a deeply grounding and enlightening experience. The beauty of the Sedona landscape inspires a deep connection with nature and reminds us of the importance of grounding our practice in the physical world, even as we reach for the spiritual.

The world is dotted with sacred places, and each offers unique insights and energies...

Machu Picchu in Peru

Located high in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is a testament to the spiritual vision of the Inca civilization. Built in harmony with the earth and sky, this ancient city invites us to connect with Pachamama (Mother Earth) and cosmic energies. The sense of peace and awe surrounding you as you wander its stone pathways can deeply enhance your meditation practice and foster a connection with the past, present, and future.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia

This massive sandstone monolith in the heart of the Australian outback is deeply sacred to the Anangu Aboriginal people. Uluru's presence is powerful and grounding and teaches the importance of respecting and being connected to the Earth. The stillness and vibrant color changes of the rock at sunrise and sunset offer moments of deep reflection and meditation, and foster a profound connection with the natural world.

Stonehenge in England

Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument whose purpose is still the subject of speculation, is an awe-inspiring testament to how ancient people understood the universe. The alignment of the stones with the solar and lunar cycles speaks to the interconnectedness of life and the universe. Practicing yoga in front of such a monument, even if only in spirit, can inspire a deep reverence for the mystery of existence and the interconnectedness of all things.

The essence of these places in your practice

You don't have to travel across the world to experience the transformation that these spiritual places have to offer.

We can embody the essence of these sacred places in our daily practice through intention, mindfulness, and cultivating inner silence. Here are some tips:

Reflections from history

Begin your practice by reflecting on the enduring nature of these places and remembering the many souls who have sought spiritual solace here before you.

Elements from nature

Incorporate elements that represent the power of the earth, such as rocks, crystals, or water, to remind yourself of the natural beauty and spiritual power of places like Uluru and Machu Picchu.

Sounds of culture

To deepen the practice, use music or sounds that evoke the essence of these sacred places, such as Tibetan singing bowls, didgeridoo (wooden instrument) meditations, or Gregorian chants.

TIP: Try...

Before your next mat practice, try closing your eyes, surrounding yourself with silence, and imagining that you are in a spiritual place of your choosing. Whether you imagine a place in nature by a soothing river, on a climbed mountain, or at a temple of holiness, transport your thoughts to a safe place where you feel free and special...Your asanas will immediately take on a different momentum.

Taking a spiritual journey to these places, whether physically or metaphorically, reminds us that yoga is so much more.

It is a path to understanding the deeper truths of our existence.

It is a way to harmonize our inner world with the outer universe.

The experience we gain from connecting with the spiritual energy of such places enriches our practice and teaches us lessons of resilience, peace, and interconnectedness.

These spiritual places essentially offer us a mirror in which to reflect the parts of ourselves that need to be explored, healed, and celebrated.

Every step on our yogic journey, every asana, and every breath is an opportunity for change and growth.

When we incorporate these experiences into our practice, we change not only ourselves, but the world around us, one breath at a time...

Do you have experience of travelling to spiritual places? What place attracts you to visit for this purpose?
